Sciubba (international studies, Rhodes College) explores the US national security implications of global demographic trends. He describes an approach for systematically including population variables in assessments of national security; describes trends that are likely to pose challenges and opportunities for national security; and predicts the ways that these trends are likely to develop in relationship with other political, economic, and social trends. Specific topics include youthful age structures of developing states as a risk to the security of regimes, aging populations in the developed world as a challenge to recruitment and a possible factor affecting the willingness of allies to support security activities, the implications for states that are in between these two extremes, international migration as a security challenge, processes of urbanization and population distribution challenges, sex ratio imbalances, and differential growth among ethnic and religious groups.
