Annotation Summary:

Contributors to this collection of essays are UK and American academics in religious studies, divinity, law, and international affairs, in addition to former officials in England's Ministry of Defense. They analyze principles of 'just war,' developed in both Christian and Muslim traditions since the times of St. Augustine, which define a military operation as just only if it is undertaken with competent authority, with a right intention, and if the harm judged likely to result is not disproportionate to the good to be achieved. Using these principles as their metrics, they examine how liberal democracies can fight global terrorism justly. They explore how just war thinking has shaped the development of a new US counterinsurgency doctrine, now being implemented in current operations in Afghanistan, and address issues related to challenging Al-Qaeda's and America's justification of terror, and public security versus civil liberties and privacy. Fisher is affiliated with King's College, UK. Wicker is affiliated with the Council on Christian Approaches to Defense and Disarmament. Annotation ©2010 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
