Annotation One Flew Over Dadaab
eOne Flew Over Dadaab,f is a film produced by UNESCO and Asia]Africa Kappa
Productions (2012) in close collaboration with UNHCR and partners. The film
offers a rare insight into the ongoing drama of people who are forced to live in
some of the most severe conditions on earth: the Dadaab Refugee Camps in
Northeastern Kenya, the largest camps in the world home to more than 500,000
refugees mostly from Somalia The film depicts the continuous humanitarian crisis
through the eyes of the staff of the United Nations and other international
organizations; people who are fighting an epic battle against hopelessness, trying
to improve the fate of refugees, both children and adults by using education and
learning as their tools.
Also the film brings to the fore the challenges facing education provision to
refugees and various initiatives employed by education providers to provide
education in such debilitating conditions. While an extensive educational system
has been developed for refugees in the camps, including pre]primary, primary,
secondary, adult literacy, special education and vocational schools, wide]ranging
challenges remain. These include limited resources, poor quality of education and
annual planning cycles which render forward planning extremely difficult.
UNESCO has produced this film as a public awareness and advocacy tool aimed at
informing and triggering action and discussion on the provision of the right to
education of refugee children, youth and adults in the context of Quality
Education for All (EFA) and Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). Moreover,
the production of this film forms part of a programme UNESCO is launching
towards playing a more strategic role in ensuring that the right of Somali children,
youth and adults to quality education is protected and fulfilled and also in
promoting education and learning as their tools for their livelihoods under
extraordinarily difficult circumstances.
