Transformations of statehood take place in mtltiple ways. While globalisation affects the sovereignty of every nation state. European states face special challenges due to European integration. Which theories of statehood can explain the new developments? How will democracy, representation and citizenship be re-articulated in the European polity? Are state actors yielding to economic powers or are they just shifting decision-making from one arena to another? Which new modus of regulation develop? In this context the authors discuss the question wether the mode of governance employed by the European Union points to the emergence of a European super-state. |
