| Annotation | This paper examines the links between civil wars and state formation. It particularly focuses on 1) the rise of rebel movements in the post-Cold War period; 2) the strategies they use to legitimize their existence and claims to power, 3) how they transform military power into political strength, and 4) the political orders they ultimately put in place. The paper’s authors also examine how statehood itself, understood as a constantly changing process of the institutionalization of power relations, is negotiated over by rebels and other both during and after conflicts. | ||||
